Before we dive into the rooting proper, we thought it is worth knowing what rooting as far as Android smartphones are concerned is all about.
Rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control(known as root access) over various Android subsystems. As Android uses the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device gives similar access to administrative (superuser) permissions as on Linux or any other Unix-like operating system such as FreeBSD or macOS.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices. Thus, rooting gives the ability (or permission) to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized applications ("apps") that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. To root your moto E5 with superSU, you will need to first unlock the bootloader.

To unlock the bootloader, enable USB debugging by going to settings > About > Build number. Hit on the build number until you get the message "You are now a developer. After that, head back to settings and click on "developer options". Under developer options, toggle it on, toggle on "oem unlock" and USB debugging.
After you must have succeeded in unlocking the bootloader, you will need to install TWRP on your Moto E5.

Now that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader and install(flash) TWRP on your Moto E5, you can then proceed with rooting using SuperSU.
- Download SuperSu Zip from the link below.
- Copy the SuperSU file into your device internal storage or SD Card.
- Next power off your Moto E5.
- Boot into recovery mode(TWRP) and click on install.
- Next, scroll down and select the SuperSU zip file to be installed.
- When you tap on the SuperSU zip, confirm installation by sweeping from left to right as indicated on the screen.
- It should only take a moment to flash the SuperSU package. When it finishes, tap the “Wipe cache/Dalvik” button that appears and swipe to confirm.
- When that finishes, tap the “Reboot System” button to boot back into Android.
If TWRP asks if you want to install SuperSU now, choose “Do Not Install”. Sometimes, TWRP can’t detect that you already have SuperSU, so it’ll ask to flash its built-in version. But it’s almost always best to flash the latest version of SuperSU yourself, which we’ve just done.
